John Jay makes Illinois Honor Roll
John Jay Elementary School has been recognized by the state of Illinois as a 2012 Honor Roll School. Dr. Christopher Koch, State Superintendent, presented the award that reads, “Working together students, educators, and families at John Jay Elementary School, Community Consolidated School District 59, have earned a 2012 Academic Improvement Award for exemplary gains in performance on the Illinois Learning Standards.”
Our school was also thrilled to hold the area’s Honor Roll Ceremony on January 28th; where Dr. Koch presented awards to two schools from District 59, John Jay and Devonshire, along with schools in District 21, 25, 26, 57 and 62. Dr. Koch informed the audience that John Jay was selected as the host because it was one of only three schools in the state of Illinois to be receiving its fourth Academic Improvement Award.
The award ceremony began with the John Jay chorus, under the direction of Tim Prikkel, performing “I Believe I Can Fly.” After the presentation of the awards, principal, Dr. Thomas Seaton spoke to the audience which included; Dr. Koch, representatives from each Honor Award School, District 59 Administrators, Board Members, D.E.A. Representatives, and John Jay staff and students.
Highlighting our recent celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Seaton’s message spoke to adults and students alike about working towards our dreams: “as long as you actively work on making and catching your dreams, our dreams, the words of the song that our chorus sang will be true: If I can see it, then I can do it, If I just believe it, there’s nothing to it.”
