John Jay Celebrates First Annual Día de los Muertos
Throughout Mexico and by people living in other locations of Mexican ancestry, Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a widely celebrated holiday. It is also acknowledged internationally in many other cultures. On November 1 and November 2, the celebration is a gathering of family and friends to remember those who have passed on, with the belief it helps support their spiritual journey.
On Friday evening, November 3, John Jay students and families, along with Jay’s staff and administrators, gathered together to celebrate Día de los Muertos. They assembled at the school as a community to enjoy each other’s company and share some of the special traditions that honor the day: delicious Mexican food, traditional songs, a costume contest, and dance. The PTO worked diligently to recruit parent and guardian volunteers to help with the event and raise cultural awareness in the community at the same time.
“Our celebration on Friday is just one of several events that will be sponsored at John Jay School this school year,” said Laura Sandoval, principal at John Jay. “We want parents to be involved in their children’s education and be part of a school community where everyone feels welcomed at school.”
